The best place to hide something is right under one’s nose. Turns out, the same is true for problems with our working environments. You can live it every day and never realize there’s a fundamental flaw. Jason Fried, Co-founder of 37signals, explains:
I like the idea of a chat-based communication setup. I can definitely see the advantages for professionals working primarily on a computer.
Some very good points about workplace productivity (or lack thereof). Notwithstanding the tool being marketed by 37Signals, it seems that technology has taken the Manager’s role of the chief interrupter and enabled us all with that capability (interrupting others). We should all think about our own “arrogance” when we send that next message marked as urgent, or IMing the person sitting two cubes down with the message “do you have a sec?”.
Leaders, not Managers, will insure that workplace technology is employed in a fashion that generates the intended productivity improvements without the offsetting increase in arrogance.
