Dad, Stop Twittering And Listen To Me

Posted by Peter Berta on 03/16/2010

Lori Bitter, Founder and President of Continuum Crew, an integrated communications firm that focuses on engaging the 40+ consumer, just released a revealing article on the changing media habits of this age group. An article that any marketer who wants to reach this lucrative audience had better pay attention to.

Younger Boomers would rather give up their cell phone’s than their internet services. It seems that these folks, born between 1955 and 1964, are spending more time online than ever before. But wait there’s more: they’re also rapidly catching up to Gen Xer’s when it comes to social networking. A majority of them have joined Facebook within the last six months, for crying out loud. They’re also more likely to access content on line, which is bad news for anyone thinking about a career delivering newspapers or the mail.

The media profile of this group reads as one that is heavily connected and likes to explore and expand their networks. They equally skew both men and women, which dispels the stereotypical female profile of the voracious social media consumer. And here’s some more really important findings that a marketer, looking to find new ways to engage these Boomers, should tattoo on themselves. These folks have the highest household incomes, are more likely to try new products and technologies, and to make recommendations to their networks. This group craves great brand stories and is just looking for a reason to align themselves with a brand. Maybe your brand, if you reach them where they live and become a part of their conversations.

  1. Brad Barker says:

Ignore the sociable Baby Boomers at your own peril. For an audience with disposable income and no children in the left in the house, the travel industry should be swarming.

…why WOULDN’T baby boomers be all over the social media space? :)
